All northbound lanes of I-85 north of downtown Atlanta were shut down by a fiery
fatal wreck during the height of today's morning rush hour.

DeKalb police Lt. Pam Kunz said the wreck occurred about 7 a.m. when a
woman lost control of her Suburu Forester sport utility vehicle while driving in a
right lane of I-85 south of Clairmont Road. The woman "for whatever reason failed
to maintain her lane, went across the other lanes of traffic and struck the median
wall," Kunz said.

After hitting the wall, the SUV was struck by a Toyota Camry, the officer said.
The SUV and Camry were then struck by a pickup truck, which was in turn
struck by a second pickup truck.

The first pickup burst into flames, and the man driving died in the blaze, Kunz
said.

Three other vehicles were also involved in the wreck.

There were several minor injuries, but no one was transported to the hospital.

The wreck remained under investigation, and charges were pending, Kunz said.
The victim's identify had not been determined.

Southbound lanes of I-85 were also jammed as motorists slowed to look at the
wreck. Southbound traffic backed up to around I-285, while the traffic jam headed
northbound stretched back into downtown.

Five lanes of the interstate remained closed late this morning, but traffic was
squeezing by in the far right lane.
